Welcome to OLE: A Conversation with Jim Boyes
Organizational Learning and Effectiveness (OLE) is pleased to welcome the newest member of our team, Training and Development Specialist – Jim Boyes. Jim worked at the University of Alberta within the Faculty of Extension between 2001 and 2008. His first role was within Academic Technologies for Learning (ATL), then moved on to the role of Facilities and IT Manager, and finally worked directing the efforts of a group responsible for curriculum development and instructor support. Most recently Jim managed one of Canada's largest timeshare resorts located in Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C. His role was largely responsible for guest services and communications to an ownership group of approximately 12,000 lease holders. Sounds like pretty nice digs, so why come back to the U of A? We talked to Jim to find out more:
OLE: What made you decide to come to/return to the university?
JIM: I missed the academic environment with all its complexities and challenges. I also missed family and friends that were left behind after making my home in Edmonton for the previous 30 years. Living in the Columbia Valley was far different from vacationing in the valley, and finding a good work-life balance was a difficult challenge while being immersed in the tourism/hospitality industry.
OLE: What excites you most about joining the Organizational Learning and Effectiveness (formerly Staff Learning and Development) team?
JIM: I'm most excited about the sense of engagement and purpose that I see with this team. In the past, I was able to attend various leadership courses and workshops offered by Staff Learning and Development. I found them to be excellent learning opportunities that brought people together from across various faculties and units. I am looking forward to working with the OLE team to provide opportunities for professional development, personal growth, and the opportunity to network with other staff. I'm also excited about reconnecting with past colleagues and working with a group that is able to touch so many people across campus.
OLE: What do you hope to learn from the team at Organizational Learning and Effectiveness?
JIM: I hope to learn how to be an integral part of our mission to support the University's commitment to excellence.
OLE: What are some personal interests and other tidbits you might like to share so people get a sense of just who Jim Boyes is?
JIM: Hmmm ... well, I enjoy being active, and riding my bike throughout the river valley has been a favourite pastime. Attending the folk music and blues festivals have been favourite events in past summers (and enjoying a beverage or two in the beer tent). Skiing and curling round out the winter activities that I like to participate in.
