FoMD Academic Leadership GOLD Program

FoMD Academic Leadership GOLD Program pilot orientation
After more than a year in planning, the Office of the Provost in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) and Organizational Learning and Effectiveness, launched the FoMD Academic Leadership Development Pilot program with more than forty in attendance.

Over a year ago, Dr. Verna Yiu (Acting Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry), Dr. Stewart Hamilton (Director, Faculty Professionalism and Leadership, FoMD) and Victor Shewchuk (Senior Advisor, Organizational Learning and Effectiveness), identified a need to provide academic leaders with opportunities to enhance their leadership skills. After setting a Gold Standard for quality and excellence, the Academic Leadership Development GOLD program was initiated.

The Orientation session was attended by a learning cohort of twenty Physicians, Chairs, and Department Heads from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Also in attendance and bringing opening remarks was Acting Provost, Dr. Martin Feguson-Pell, Dr. D. Douglas Miller, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and Dr. Chris Cheeseman, Vice Provost & Associate Vice-President of HRS.

Dr. Stewart Hamilton addressed the cohort and encouraged each participant to develop key learning relationships from within the cohort, engage the content, and allow the learning to shape the way they do their respective work.

The Orientation and Welcome session was the first of 13 sessions to be held in the new Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA) building. The pilot continues through the remainder of 2012, concluding in June 2013 with a formal graduation ceremony. Session topics include: Values Based Leadership, Leading with Emotional Intelligence, Leading Change, and Managing Conflict. Managing HR and Financial Planning are topics that will be addressed with a specific reflection on University of Alberta culture and processes. Many of the sessions are facilitated by on-campus presenters, most of whom were in attendance at the Orientation Session.

We are delighted to report that this leadership program qualifies for the required ongoing professional development credits for the participants; something that signifies the caliber and quality of the content to be presented. The Faculty of Extension is preparing a longitudinal study of the impact of the learning on the participant's leadership style and capacity.
