GIVE, GROW, PLAY - Habitat for Humanity

GIVE to Habitat for Humanity

By now you have heard about the upcoming exciting support staff learning event GIVE, GROW, PLAY, scheduled for June 25th and June 26th, 2013. One of the objectives of GIVE, GROW, PLAY is to give U of A support staff the opportunity to increase awareness of, and interaction with, the community in which they live. For more information on this great event, visit: www.hrs.ualberta.ca/GiveGrowPlay

As part of the event, there will be several opportunities for staff within the U of A to give back to our community. A Blood Drive for Canadian Blood Services is already underway and we are now excited to tell you about another great opportunity to give back.

Have you ever considered volunteering your time in order to learn new skills, make a difference, meet new people, or see a different reality? Then join the GIVE, GROW, PLAY Habitat for Humanity Build!

Habitat for Humanity Canada is an organization that believes that every Canadian family deserves a safe, decent and affordable home. Their goal is to make that dream into a reality. On the Habitat for Humanity website they speak of the renewed sense of confidence and pride instilled within a family when home-ownership becomes a reality and that it results in happier children with improved health and grades and parents inspired to go back to school or upgrade their job skills. Supporters of Habitat for Humanity are not just providing the bricks, mortar and labor to build houses; they are giving Canadian families a chance to build a better life.

If that sounds like something you would be interested in, then the GIVE, GROW, PLAY Habitat for Humanity Build Initiative is for you. Be fulfilled by this chance to make that difference in people’s lives.

The Goal: It takes 2,200 hours of volunteering to build one home, or 298 volunteer days. We would love to say "UofA Support Staff built this home!" Even better would be to say "UofA support staff built this entire unit of four homes!!"

How to get involved: If you are interested and want to learn more, please visit our Habitat registration site to sign up. You will need to download and have two waiver forms signed. https://sites.google.com/a/ualberta.ca/give-grow-play/play/volunteer-dispatch

What it means to volunteer:
Dates/Times: You can volunteer any day between Tuesday and Friday (unless the Friday is a long weekend). Shifts are 8:30 to 4:00 pm. You will need to negotiate with your supervisor to take vacation or unpaid leave to participate. Individuals and teams are welcome. This would be a great way to do some team-building!
What to bring: All personal safety equipment and tools are provided, as well as lunch, although no special dietary needs are accommodated due to the food being a donation as well.
How to get there: Visit our registration site for details on where the Edmonton Habitat site is. Parking is available onsite.
Abilities Required: Volunteers must have the following abilities to work on Habitat construction sites:
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and apply new skills to different situations
  • Follow the instructions of the Site Supervisor independently
  • Ability to climb stairs comfortably
  • Adequate vision to do detailed work
  • Use of conversational English
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 15 pounds
  • Habitat for Humanity can offer interested UofA Habitat volunteers a day of power tools training

Please contact us at give.grow.play@ualberta.ca if you have any questions regarding the GIVE, GROW, PLAY learning event.

Note: We are also looking for volunteers to help with the GIVE, GROW, PLAY learning event itself, so if you are interested in volunteering for that instead of (or in addition to) the Habitat build, send us an email.
